Drupal in a Day at DrupalCon Vienna: From Chaos to Community Success
In a reflective post for Acolono, Nico Grienauer recapped how the Drupal Austria Association helped organise a “Drupal in a Day” workshop at DrupalCon Vienna 2025 with just one month of preparation. Designed as a beginner‑friendly, hands‑on introduction to Drupal, the event aimed to guide students and newcomers through building a functional site in a single day as part of the broader Drupal Open University Initiative, emphasising accessible education and community engagement.
Despite the tight timeline, the organising team managed outreach to universities, marketing, logistics, and volunteer coordination while also managing other DrupalCon responsibilities. Registration numbers quickly exceeded expectations, prompting a cap at 120 participants, and around 90 certificates were awarded, marking strong engagement and completion.
Instructors Hilmar Hallbjörnsson and Martin Anderson‑Clutz led the workshop with support from a team of helpers, and sponsorship from Um að gera and backing from other Austrian Drupal agencies contributed to the event’s success.
Participants left not only with practical skills and a working Drupal site but also a sense of belonging and encouragement to continue in the Drupal community. Many described the experience as approachable and empowering, noting that learning by building helped them grasp key concepts and paths for further involvement.
The success of the event has inspired planning for future workshops, including one at DrupalCon North America 2026 in Chicago. The team encourages others to adapt the model and join the initiative to bring Drupal education to more regions and audiences.
