Drupal Turns 25: Vienna to Host Local Celebration on January 15

The in-person event will be held on January 15, 2026, from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM CET at the ACOLONO office. Attendees can expect an informal evening of conversations, drinks, and reflections on Drupal’s journey as one of the web’s most enduring and influential open source content management frameworks. To include those across time zones, the wider community is organising a full week of virtual celebrations, accessible at meet.drupal.de.

Launched in January 2001 by Dries Buytaert, Drupal emerged from a dorm room project and evolved into a powerful platform known for handling structured content, complex editorial workflows, and multilingual sites. It is backed by a vast contributor base and supported by the Drupal Association since 2006. Over the years, major milestones have included the adoption of Composer and Twig, the release of AI-supportive tools, and recognition as a Digital Public Good in 2023.

Among the latest developments, Drupal CMS 1.0 and Drupal Canvas have introduced streamlined content creation experiences, while Drupal 11 continues to push the project’s technical frontier. ACOLONO has been actively contributing to Drupal’s evolution, particularly in the area of responsible AI publishing through tools like AI Sidekick and Alttext.ing.

This milestone celebration not only honors two and a half decades of open source collaboration but also sets the tone for Drupal’s future as a flexible, community-driven platform.
