Australia’s GovCMS Migrates to Fully Open Source Hosting Platform
Australia’s centralized web platform, GovCMS, has completed a major modernization by replacing its proprietary hosting system with a fully open source solution. The transformation, led by amazee.io in collaboration with Salsa Digital and the Department of Finance, was driven by the need for greater transparency, security, scalability, and long-term control.
Built on Lagoon and Kubernetes and hosted within a secure, government-controlled AWS tenancy, the new platform supports over 310 government websites. It delivers modern developer workflows, significantly enhances scalability, and aligns with federal standards for open technology adoption.
The open source environment has proven its resilience, remaining fully operational during traffic surges—such as a month when the platform handled 1.96 billion hits without any downtime. More than 200 developers now benefit from improved autonomy and streamlined workflows, enabling faster deployments and easier management of content and infrastructure.
GovCMS also achieved IRAP compliance, reinforcing its capacity to handle sensitive government data securely. The platform now includes disaster recovery capabilities and advanced vulnerability tracking, ensuring operational continuity and robust cybersecurity.
