AI Innovation Takes Center Stage at 2026 Drupal Hackathon

Drupal AI Hackathon 2026 “Play to Impact” with the European Commission

In a recap published on Drupal.org, Marcus Johansson reflects on the 2026 “Play to Impact” Drupal AI Hackathon, held on 27 January at the European Commission in Brussels. The two-day event brought together more than 70 developers, designers, UX specialists, and project leads to experiment with AI-driven tools for content editing and site building.

Participants were divided into nine teams and challenged to build either AI-assisted editorial tools or new approaches to creating websites using Drupal’s Canvas framework. All solutions were required to use Mistral AI models, with Mistral acting as one of the main sponsors alongside amazee.ai and DrupalForge/Devpanel.

Johansson notes that compared with the previous year’s hackathon, this edition ran more smoothly, with teams able to produce more stable and polished demonstrations. Preparation sessions with real platform stakeholders also helped teams focus on practical use cases.

The winning team, Token Burners, released two contributed modules: FlowDrop Agents and FlowDrop Node Sessions. These integrate Drupal’s AI agents into the FlowDrop workflow system, allowing workflows to be triggered and managed through Drupal entities.

The event concluded with presentations to a jury that included representatives from the European Commission, Mistral, the Drupal Association, and the Drupal AI Initiative. Johansson describes the hackathon as a productive experiment in applying AI to real Drupal workflows, rather than a purely conceptual exercise.
