Reflections from DrupalCon Vienna: Paul Johnson on Community, Inclusion, and Emerging Talent
In a recent blog post, Paul Johnson shares his reflections from DrupalCon Vienna 2025, focusing on key moments that underscore the Drupal community’s direction and momentum.
One moment featured prominently is the return of Hilmar Kári Hallbjörnsson, who recently recovered from hospitalisation to co-lead the Drupal University presentation and “Drupal in a Day” training alongside Jean-Paul Vosmeer. The free training, aimed at students and newcomers, expanded from 30 to 90 participants due to demand.
Vera Herzmann’s keynote on neurodiversity explored how traits often seen as limitations may offer advantages, particularly when paired with AI. A striking moment came when only ten attendees out of a thousand identified as neurotypical, highlighting the community’s cognitive diversity.
Community recognition featured prominently. The Women in Drupal “Build” award went to Sinduri Guntupalli for her contributions to event organization across Europe. The World Cancer Day website, managed by Charles Andrew Revkin of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), won Best Non-Profit at the Splash Awards. The site also featured in a video showcasing how Drupal AI manages large-scale user content during campaigns.
Johnson noted that more than 25% of attendees were first-timers. Among them was Witze Van der Straeten, a student spotlighted during the DriesNote for his work in Drupal and AI—just months after discovering the platform. Johnson concludes by encouraging others to join and contribute, emphasizing the community’s openness and shared purpose.
