Nonprofit Transforms Web Infrastructure and Cuts Costs to Zero with AWS
Parents Helping Parents (PHP), a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting families with children who have disabilities, faced significant challenges with their existing WordPress website. Hosted on WP Engine, the site incurred high annual hosting costs of approximately $1,800, coupled with limited development environments and an outdated codebase. Recognizing the need for modernization while adhering to a strict budget, PHP sought a more sustainable solution.
To address these issues, PHP migrated their web infrastructure to AWS using DevPanel. This strategic move allowed the organization to leverage $5,000 per year in AWS nonprofit credits, effectively reducing their hosting costs to nearly $0. The migration not only cut costs but also provided PHP with unlimited development and staging environments, enhancing their operational capabilities significantly.
The migration process, which included a comprehensive upgrade of the codebase, was completed in approximately six weeks, with active development taking about three to four weeks. Post-migration, PHP experienced substantial improvements in site performance and security. The integration of tools such as browser-based VS Code and Cloudflare CDN has enabled developers to launch new environments instantly, while a built-in Web Application Firewall (WAF) helps protect against malicious traffic.
As a result of these enhancements, PHP's website now operates more efficiently and securely, allowing the organization to allocate more resources towards its mission of supporting families. This case exemplifies how nonprofits can modernize their web infrastructure effectively while minimizing costs.
