Alt Text and Accessibility Spotlighted in Shields’ DrupalCon Vienna Recap
James Shields' third entry in the 2025 Drupal Advent Calendar shines a light on alternative text and accessible images, drawing from a lively session at DrupalCon Vienna.
In the talk, AmyJune Hineline and Chris Vickery used music album covers as examples to explore effective and ineffective uses of alt text. Their session, titled “Beyond 99 Red Balloons,” demonstrated how the right descriptions can make images meaningful for users of assistive technologies. Shields humorously notes that Hineline’s greeting at the start of the talk was likely directed at him, as he arrived late to the session.
The post embeds the presentation video and links to the bonus slides, which include useful extras such as how to add alt text on Facebook—a feature many users may not realize exists. Shields uses this opportunity to remind the Drupal community that meaningful alt text isn’t just a checkbox but a key part of building inclusive and accessible web experiences.
