Drupal “Back-to-Basics” Initiative Seeks New Leader to Boost Beginner Support

Michael Anello, a longtime contributor to the Drupal community, is seeking a new leader to take the helm of "Back-to-Basics," a grassroots initiative aimed at increasing beginner-level presentations at Drupal events. Designed to help attract and retain new Drupal users, the effort addresses a critical gap in training and engagement opportunities for novice developers.

The concept, discussed on the Talking Drupal podcast in April 2025, proposes a sustainable model: 6–8 pre-prepared beginner presentations made available to Drupal event organizers. These sessions would be created and maintained by experienced Drupal trainers and delivered by top-tier presenters to ensure quality and inspiration. The goal is to make it easier for events to consistently include meaningful content for newcomers.

Michael, currently overcommitted, is unable to lead the initiative himself but emphasizes strong support already in place. The Drupal Open Curriculum Community Initiative has expressed interest, and several experienced trainers have agreed to contribute presentations in exchange for community promotion. Michael is also committed to mentoring the new lead, offering introductions, guidance, and logistical support.

Challenges ahead include securing presentation slots at crowded events and ensuring that beginner session presenters are not penalized during session selection processes. However, the potential benefits for community growth and sustainability are significant.

Interested individuals are encouraged to take the lead and shape the program, with tasks including recruiting trainers, determining presentation topics, developing content standards, and coordinating with event organizers.
