Drupal Powers World Cancer Day with Scalable, People-Centered Digital Platform

The World Cancer Day website, built on Drupal, has become a cornerstone of global awareness and advocacy efforts led by the Union for International Cancer Control. Designed by digital partner 1xINTERNET, the platform enables widespread participation while supporting large-scale traffic, complex storytelling tools, and multilingual accessibility—all in service of collective action against cancer.

World Cancer Day is observed every year on 4 February. The 2025–2027 campaign theme, “United by Unique,” emphasises people-centred care and prioritises the stories and participation of individuals, families, and communities. The Drupal-powered website supports this mission by delivering an inclusive experience across languages, devices, and formats.

In 2025 alone, the campaign hosted over 900 activities in 120 countries, collected 600+ user stories across multiple media formats, and reached more than 9 million people on social media. The platform recorded over 530,000 visitors and 300,000 campaign video views, offering features such as an interactive global activity map, an event planner, and a custom poster creation tool.

Built on Drupal, the site scales to handle massive demand—processing traffic spikes exceeding 194 GB per hour. Its architecture enables multilingual content management, dynamic scrollytelling, and accessibility-first design, providing a seamless experience even during peak usage around World Cancer Day.

To manage the high volume of user-submitted content, the campaign adopted Drupal AI to automate moderation workflows. AI helps filter, flag, and contextualise story submissions, reducing manual workload and ensuring content remains inclusive, relevant, and safe for publication at scale.

I’ve been genuinely pleased that we chose to stick with Drupal over the long term and witness its evolution into a more mature and flexible platform,” shared Charles Andrew Revkin, Senior Digital Strategy Manager at the Union for International Cancer Control.

As an open-source CMS, Drupal offers sustainability advantages critical to health-focused non-profits: no licensing fees, no vendor lock-in, and a vibrant global contributor community continuously improving the platform’s security, accessibility, and performance. These qualities are vital to initiatives such as World Cancer Day, which rely on trust, transparency, and global reach.

With its people-first design, powerful content capabilities, and resilient hosting, the Drupal-based platform is helping turn awareness into real-world action—mobilising millions in the fight against cancer.
