Symfony 7.4 and 8.0 Released with Identical Features but Diverging Support Paths

Symfony 7.4 and 8.0 Released with Identical Features but Different Upgrade Paths

Symfony released versions 7.4 and 8.0 at the end of November 2025, marking a coordinated release that delivers the same feature set across both versions while introducing different approaches to deprecation and long-term support.

Version 7.4 includes all new features added since Symfony 7.0 and retains the deprecation layers introduced throughout the 7.x series. Version 8.0 removes all deprecated features, resulting in a cleaner codebase. Developers are advised to first upgrade to 7.4, resolve any deprecations identified during testing, and then proceed to 8.0. Deprecations can be detected by running test suites with the --display-deprecations option. These warnings may originate from the application code or from third-party bundles and libraries.

Symfony 7.4 is a long-term support release with three years of bug fixes and four years of security fixes, while Symfony 8.0 is a regular release with eight months of support. Projects prioritizing long-term stability may opt to remain on 7.4, although this means delaying access to new features until the next LTS version, Symfony 8.4, in November 2027. Projects seeking continuous improvements are encouraged to adopt regular releases, allowing for gradual handling of deprecations and easier upgrades between minor versions.
