KanHan Helps Hong Kong SWD Cut 80% Licensing Fees with Drupal
KanHan has enabled Hong Kong's Social Welfare Department (SWD) to cut licensing fees by up to 80 percent by replacing Microsoft SharePoint with an open-source intranet built on Drupal. The project forms a central part of the department's digital transformation strategy.
SWD had struggled with SharePoint's per-user licensing model, which created high costs and complex administration across its large workforce and visitor base. Kanhan addressed these challenges by implementing a hybrid solution that uses Drupal for intranet functionality while retaining Microsoft Office in the backend for productivity, security, and administration.
The system combines Drupal's strengths in content management, easy authoring, multilingual support, and multi-site capabilities with the reliability of Microsoft Office tools. This approach allows broad access without additional licensing costs while ensuring continuity with existing IT systems.
The new intranet now delivers lower operating expenses, improved accessibility, and a sustainable digital infrastructure for the Hong Kong government department.
