Drupal Advent Calendar Day 10: EditTogether Brings Google Docs-Style Collaboration to Drupal
Day 10 of the Drupal Advent Calendar, curated by James Shields, introduces EditTogether, a real-time collaborative editing tool designed specifically for Drupal, featured in a session at Florida DrupalCamp 2025 by Alex Jones and Ken Rickard.
Guest contributor AmyJune Hineline recaps the session, which presented EditTogether as a self-hosted alternative to tools like Google Docs, built with Drupal’s values of privacy and content ownership in mind. The project tackles long-standing issues in content workflows, including delays, versioning confusion, and dependence on third-party platforms. Its architecture relies on ProseMirror for rich text editing, yjs for conflict-free real-time syncing, and WebRTC for direct peer-to-peer collaboration, keeping content under site owner control.
Beyond basic editing, EditTogether supports threaded comments, automatic saving, and works with Drupal’s existing workflows such as Content Moderation. The team is continuing development with a focus on stability, documentation, and deployment planning for infrastructure like signaling and TURN servers. As it evolves, EditTogether offers a promising new way for Drupal teams to collaborate natively, efficiently, and securely inside their sites.
