Backdrop CMS Previews Layout Paragraphs for Enhanced Content Editing Flexibility

Backdrop CMS is developing a new feature called Layout Paragraphs to provide content editors with more visual control over layouts while preserving structure and maintainability.

The update was presented by Laryn Kragt Bakker of Aten Design Group at a Backdrop User Group meeting on December 18. The work is based on lessons from modern Drupal and the Web Express installation profile originally built at the University of Colorado Boulder. Currently deployed at the University of Colorado Denver, Web Express has also supported this initiative. Layout Paragraphs builds on Backdrop’s existing Layout API to extend its capabilities to the Paragraphs module. Instead of introducing a new interface, the feature reuses Backdrop’s core layout builder, maintaining consistency in regions, configuration, and editing patterns.

Paragraph-specific layout templates are stored separately from core layouts, allowing multiple regions and column combinations without cluttering the main UI. This enables editors to manage content visually using drag-and-drop, modal configuration, and improved filtering, particularly on sites with numerous paragraph types. Site builders can define which paragraph types and layout templates are available for each field, or lock a content type to a single layout, offering a balance between flexibility and editorial control.

When layout templates are switched, existing content is preserved by matching region machine names. Templates can be cloned and adjusted to ensure a smooth transition. If a layout template is deleted, users are prompted to select a replacement to retain content structure. These features aim to prevent the content disruption that often occurs during layout changes. While some cache handling improvements are still needed, the core mechanisms are already functioning as intended.

The project is not yet ready for production use and relies on the approval of a core patch, Issue #6808, which expands layout type support. Once the patch is finalized and tested, a pre-release version of Paragraphs 2.x will be made available. The Backdrop community is invited to help by testing the patch, confirming existing functionality remains stable, and providing feedback on user experience and workflows.

Layout Paragraphs supports modern page-building practices without sacrificing structure or maintainability. It enables reusable design systems and editorial workflows that give users control within clearly defined boundaries. The effort reflects Backdrop’s philosophy of thoughtful architecture, UI reuse, and steady progress. More updates are expected in early 2026 as testing continues.
