British Council and Opencentric Win Gold for Blended Learning Programme

The British Council and education technology company Opencentric have won Gold at the 2025 Learning Technologies Awards for a large-scale blended learning initiative supporting teachers in China and Indonesia.

The award was given in the category Best Use of Blended Learning – Public and Non-Profit Sector. The joint programme, titled Transforming Teaching Through Blended Learning at Scale, was delivered through Opencentric’s mobile-first platform In Class. It provided professional development to more than 1,600 teachers and reached an estimated 61,000 learners indirectly. Judges praised the programme for aligning pedagogy with technology and for its scale, complexity, and focus on real-world impact.

In China, the project improved teachers’ use of English in classrooms through mobile learning, mentoring, and peer support networks. In Indonesia, it supported a national rollout involving more than 480 teachers across 35 provinces and trained local mentors to ensure long-term sustainability. The initiative addresses urgent challenges in education by providing high-quality, accessible training for educators across diverse contexts.

Dr Adam Edmett, Head of EdTech and Innovation at the British Council, said:

“This award reflects the real-world impact of our work with teachers and learners. We are thrilled to see our blended learning approach recognised on an international stage. It demonstrates how technology and pedagogy can work hand-in-hand to transform education at scale.”

William Velasco, CEO at Opencentric, commented:

“Winning Gold at the Learning Technologies Awards is a significant milestone for our team. It reflects our shared commitment with the British Council to improving teaching quality on a global scale. As education systems continue to adapt to new challenges, we will keep building solutions that are practical, scalable, and grounded in real classroom needs. This project proves that impactful digital transformation is possible when technology is built with educators at its heart.”
