As major Drupal agencies contract, new data suggests transformation and renewal are still possible.
DCoE Finds: "The Drupal Economy Is Struggling, But There’s Hope"

Across the global Drupal ecosystem, agencies are facing a steep economic downturn. Workforce reductions, fewer government and education contracts, and shrinking budgets have created one of the most demanding environments in years. Yet amid the struggle, data from the Drupal Center of Excellence shows growth in community engagement and new opportunities for recovery.

The Drupal Economy Is Hurting

The Drupal economy, and the broader digital economy, are struggling. We feel it, and you probably feel it too.

Not long ago, we posted a job advertisement and received over 200 responses within the first 48 hours. We ranked applicants from most to least qualified and reached out to the top 25. Every single one — 100% — was either unemployed or soon to be unemployed. It’s bad out there.

Data From the Top Drupal Certified Partners

We reviewed LinkedIn company insights for many of the top Drupal Certified Partners, and the results are startling. Over 80% of the leading Drupal agencies have reduced their workforce–some by more than half.

  • Palantir: down 54% (past 2 years)
  • Mediacurrent: down 36% (past 2 years)
  • OpenSense Labs: down 32% (past 2 years)
  • Lullabot: down 24% (past 2 years)
  • Evolving Web: down 21% (past 6 months)

However, a few agencies — particularly those embracing AI and digital transformation — are showing modest growth:

  • Annertech: up 10% (past 2 years)
  • Zoocha: up 7% (past 2 years)
  • Technocrat: up 13% (past 2 years)

We appear to be living in a K-shaped economy, where some agencies rise while others fall. Those that diversified or automated have expanded, while others face contraction and layoffs.

Why the Decline?

Drupal has long been a favorite among government agencies, higher education, associations, and nonprofits — all of which are under pressure.

In the United States, reduced government spending, workforce reductions, grant terminations, and shrinking university subsidies have combined to slow digital investment. These pressures ripple outward, affecting Drupal agencies and professionals worldwide.

A Glimmer of Hope

Despite the challenges, there are signs of renewal.

The Drupal Center of Excellence (DCoE) now hosts an RFPs/Tenders section featuring dozens of live opportunities from organizations worldwide — everything from Website Support and Development Services to Drupal Migrations, Hosting, and Digital Strategy.

Since launching our Opportunities Database in August, we’ve seen a 99% jump in user registrations — proof that the Drupal community is still vibrant, ambitious, and looking for ways to grow.

Rebuilding the Ecosystem

The DCoE’s mission is simple: to help the Drupal economy recover and thrive.

  • For agencies: We provide tools and intelligence to help find contracts, hire the right people, and grow sustainably.
  • For Drupal professionals: We connect you to jobs that align with your skills, values, and work-life balance.
  • For product owners: We help match you with qualified Drupal agencies and professionals who can ensure your sites stay secure, modern, and efficient.

And for everyone, we encourage you to join the Drupal Association, contribute code, mentor others, and pursue certifications like the Acquia Triple Certified Drupal Expert.

Looking Ahead

While the data paints a complex picture, it also points to resilience. Drupal has survived and adapted through multiple economic cycles — and this time will be no different.

The Drupal Center of Excellence is committed to being part of the solution: connecting people to opportunity, helping agencies grow, and strengthening the ecosystem for the long term.

If you’re part of the Drupal community — a developer, designer, manager, or client — now is the time to get involved, share knowledge, and rebuild together.

Let’s ensure that the next chapter of the Drupal story is one of renewal, innovation, and shared success.
