James Abraham Experiments with Claude Skill for Drupal and DDEV Automation
Drupal AI Initiative lead, James Abrahams, is experimenting with Claude Code to automate the setup of Drupal projects, combining GitHub integration and DDEV local development workflows into a single streamlined Skill.
The initiative leverages Anthropic’s Claude Code for the Web, a research preview tool currently offering $1,000 in free usage credits. The project is designed to reduce repetitive tasks for developers and non-developers alike, including initializing Drupal repos, setting up DDEV, and generating standard files such as .gitignore.
Inspired by a similar AI Skill project from Lauren Morris, James shared the motivation behind this effort as easing the overhead of routine setup—especially for users who don't manage these configurations daily. He aims to use the tool not only for setup but also to adopt an AI-driven development style.
One notable experiment involves using Claude to commit each AI-generated response to a dedicated Git branch, followed by manual review via pull requests. “Once I saw it that way, it was obvious I should have been doing that from the start,” he noted on LinkedIn.
The project also explores integration with FreelyGive's own stack, potentially combining Claude’s automation with DevPanel and DrupalForge to instantly preview branch-based changes on hosted sites.
Highlights
- Claude Skill built to automate Drupal setup with GitHub and DDEV
- Inspired by Lauren Morris’s AI Skill work
- Integrates Git workflows where each AI response becomes a commit
- Targets non-developers with reusable project boilerplates
- Long-term goal: AI-driven deployments via DevPanel and DrupalForge
"It's super lacking. I can see why they gave away $1,000. I can barely spend any of it because it keeps not working at all. But it's a research preview. I can see the power of it."
