Project LACI Adds Redline View to Enhance Legal Content Analysis in Drupal

Project Legal Aid Content Intelligence (LACI) has added a new redline view feature that visually highlights changes in legal text within Drupal. The enhancement improves how users compare and interpret updates to laws and regulations, offering both side-by-side and inline “redline” views.

The feature was developed in collaboration with BFC Digital, which integrated a diff match patch library into the LACI module. This library calculates and displays differences in text versions using color-coded highlights, helping users identify insertions and deletions more efficiently.

Luigi Bai, a Texas attorney and technology professional involved in the project, highlighted the update as an example of open collaboration in the Free and Open Source Software (F/OSS) ecosystem. The diff match patch component is distributed under the Apache License 2.0, while Project LACI itself is licensed under the Affero General Public License v3 (or later). These licenses are compatible in this use, allowing users to freely use, modify, and redistribute the software. LACI helps organizations manage and maintain documents containing legal information and is funded in large part by the Legal Services Corporation (LSC), USA.

Hosted on Codeberg

Unlike most Drupal-related modules, Project LACI hosts its repositories on Codeberg, a nonprofit, democratic, and community-operated software forge based in Berlin. LACI currently maintains 13 repositories, 7 projects, and 11 packages on Codeberg. The platform, powered by Forgejo, offers a privacy-friendly and transparent alternative to commercial hosting services such as GitHub.

According to Codeberg’s mission statement, its goal is to “build and maintain a free collaboration platform for creating, archiving, and preserving code,” without reliance on proprietary or for-profit infrastructure. This philosophy aligns closely with LACI’s commitment to open, accessible legal technology.

Enhancing Legal Transparency

The new redline view strengthens Drupal’s utility for legal and civic organizations that track legislative changes or case law updates. By allowing structured comparison of old and new versions, the feature supports accountability and clarity for legal aid providers, researchers, and policymakers.

“This new feature really demonstrates the power of the free and open-source software ecosystem,”

wrote Luigi Bai, crediting BFC Digital for integrating the diff/match/patch library and making the redline view possible.
