Drupal UI Suite Pushes Toward 11.3: Display Builder Beta Launch and Core Contributions Near Completion

The initiative reached a pivotal point in September with the final alpha release of Display Builder (Alpha 5), now entering its beta phase. This milestone marks a feature freeze for version 1.0.0, establishing Display Builder as a foundational component in Drupal's transition toward becoming a design system-native CMS. Core Contributions Ahead of Feature Freeze

The team is actively working on four major contributions targeted for inclusion in Drupal core:

• Style API: Adds support for template modifications, attribute management, and library dependencies — moving beyond CSS-only approaches.
• Design Tokens API: Enables runtime tokens for consistent and flexible theming.
• Icon Form Element: Introduces a standardised input type for icon selection in forms.
• Schema References: Improves integration between UI Patterns and Canvas through strategic schema alignment.

The work is being led by contributors including Flora and David, with progress visible in active issue queues. The goal is to land these changes before the Drupal 11.3 feature freeze on October 26.

Display Builder Beta Nears Release

Originally targeted for September, the Display Builder beta is now set for October. The delay allowed the team to implement key features, including:

• Layout Builder migration tools
• Real-time collaboration using Server-Sent Events (SSE)
• Strengthened API security in preparation for Drupal's security advisory process
• Full end-to-end testing using Playwright

The beta will be feature-complete and ready for early production use, although interface refinements will continue.

UI Patterns and Module Updates

UI Patterns versions 2.0.9 and 2.0.10 introduced full token support, improved array handling in Views integration, and a nearly complete translation configuration system. Migration support from UI Patterns 1 to 2 is advancing, with automated testing planned in the coming weeks.

Canvas Compatibility and Ongoing Fixes

Compatibility issues between Canvas and UI Patterns were noted, particularly around JSON schema references. The teams are coordinating fixes and working toward decorator pattern implementation within the SDC plugin manager to restore cross-module compatibility.

Collaboration with Kern UX Design System

Lukas presented a new opportunity for collaboration with Kern UX, a German government-backed design system focused on accessibility and modular frontend development. While the project is currently German-only, discussions around internationalisation are underway. Several Drupal community members have expressed interest in integrating Kern UX components into Drupal, similar to a parallel initiative in the TYPO3 ecosystem.

Community and Upcoming Events

The UI Suite community has grown to 380 members on Slack and over 1,100 installs across its key modules. At DrupalCon Vienna, the team will deliver two presentations focused on design systems and core theming approaches. Private demos of the Display Builder beta will also be available.
