Fons Vandamme Shares His Vision Behind Webhaven, a Thoughtful Drupal Starter Kit
Fons Vandamme, the developer behind Webhaven, has published a detailed blog post sharing the motivations and technical foundation of his long-planned Drupal Starter project. Titled “Building the Drupal Starter I’ve Always Been Dreaming Of,” the post walks through his personal experiences with Drupal and explains why Webhaven aims to make the platform more accessible from the outset.
Fons has been working with Drupal since 2009 and says it continues to meet his needs more than any alternative. While he occasionally questioned whether his attachment to Drupal was driven by sunk-cost fallacy, hands-on experimentation with other technologies consistently brought him back to Drupal’s strengths—its modularity, maturity, and lack of technical limitations.
Reflecting on the growing role of AI in web development, Fons writes that Drupal remains well-positioned for the future. He references a blog post by Dries Buytaert titled “Why Drupal is Built for the AI Era” as a timely affirmation of the platform’s readiness to adapt.
Webhaven, as Fons defines it, is a ready-made foundation for Drupal projects. It includes logical configurations, essential contributed modules, and a customizable design that enables developers to focus on content, features, and branding instead of repeatedly setting up the same core elements.
The current version of Webhaven includes:
- A Drupal 11 installation
- Contributed modules essential for modern projects
- Multilingual support
- Technical SEO features such as meta tags and an XML sitemap
- Predefined content types, including pages, landing pages, blogs, events, and showcases
- A page builder with reusable blocks
- A customizable, component-based Drupal theme
- A form builder
Fons emphasises that Drupal originally felt suitable for projects of all sizes, but recent complexity and cost factors have made it less appealing for smaller teams. Webhaven is his attempt to restore that balance by lowering the entry barrier without limiting long-term potential.
The minimum viable version of Webhaven is already in place and available to explore at webhaven.io and demo.webhaven.io. A public roadmap is available, and users can sign up for updates on the upcoming official launch.
