Open Intranet Adds Messenger Module for Account-Free Staff Communication
Droptica has introduced a Messenger module for Open Intranet, allowing organisations to communicate with staff who do not have system logins. Shared by Grzegorz Bartman, the feature enables sending SMS and email notifications to deskless workers, contractors, or external partners using only their contact information. This update enhances operational communication without requiring per-user licenses, offering a cost-effective alternative to proprietary platforms such as Microsoft or Google.
The Messenger module imports contact data from CSV files and lets teams group recipients by department or location. Messages can be sent directly without creating user profiles, and all communication activity is logged for auditing. The module is part of the broader Open Intranet suite, a free, open-source intranet system built on Drupal. The platform promotes full ownership by allowing organisations to host, customise and extend their own systems without vendor lock-in or subscription fees.
According to Grzegorz, upcoming plans for the Messenger module include integration with additional channels such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, push notifications and mobile apps. These features aim to further improve outreach across distributed teams while maintaining data control. Open Intranet also includes features such as file sharing, document management, and internal collaboration tools, making it a comprehensive alternative for teams looking to replace over-engineered or rented intranet solutions.
By enabling communication with non-account holders, the Messenger module addresses a critical gap in traditional intranet systems. It reflects a broader movement towards open infrastructure that prioritises transparency, cost control and operational flexibility. The update is available now as part of the Open Intranet system hosted on Droptica’s official platform.
