Creative Thinking and Collaboration Shine at DrupalCamp Scotland 2025
Emma Horrell reflects on the energy and ideas sparked at DrupalCamp Scotland 2025, an event that showcased creative thinking, UX innovation, and the collaborative spirit driving the Drupal community forward.
The day featured nine sessions covering topics like Object-Oriented UX, image management, and Single Directory Components. Emma, attending as both speaker and delegate, shared updates from her leadership role on the Drupal CMS team, including UX research priorities and a preview of version 2.0. Highlights included Drupal Canvas, the new visual page builder; expanded AI features; and streamlined integrations aimed at reducing friction for non-technical users.
Talks from other community members brought fresh insight into interface design and editor experience. A standout moment was hearing how Renfrewshire Council applied Object-Oriented UX in practice, prompting Emma to revisit its potential in Drupal’s terminology initiatives. Meanwhile, sessions by Gareth Alexander and Tony Barker explored accessibility-first approaches to image editing, and Phil Norton demonstrated how SDCs can simplify theming workflows in Drupal.
Equally valuable were the informal conversations between sessions, where Horrell engaged with contributors from LocalGov Drupal, the Drupal AI initiative, and university teams. These discussions reinforced shared goals for building accessible, adaptable platforms and showed how events like DrupalCamp Scotland foster alignment across sectors—advancing the Drupal project through open dialogue and community-driven innovation.
