Drupal Canvas: Visual Editing, Real-Time Collaboration, and a Developer-Friendly Future
Drupal just took a leap with Canvas, a visual site-building experience that replaces form-based editing with real-time, drag-and-drop page construction and live previews.
For marketers and site builders, this shift means less reliance on developers and faster workflows. Components can be dropped, styled, and populated inline, live. The Canvas experience emphasises intuitive layout adjustments and real-time collaboration, streamlining content creation for teams without sacrificing design control or flexibility.
On the technical side, Canvas is powered by code components written in JSX and CSS, rendered directly in the browser. Running on Preact, it gives frontend developers full access to APIs, dynamic page data, and a modern component development experience familiar to React users. Integration with Drupal’s Single Directory Components (SDC) means existing theme elements can be visually managed within Canvas, uniting no-code editing with a structured component system.
Canvas even includes an AI Assistant to support content generation and layout refinement during the build process. While still in beta (version 1.0.0 beta2), it represents a pivotal moment for Drupal—combining enterprise-grade capabilities with an approachable, modern interface that brings developers, designers, and marketers closer together.
