Revamping MCC's Digital Presence: A Case Study on Website Redesign
The Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) recognized the need for a comprehensive overhaul of their online presence, which included their primary website, mcc.org, and their thrift shop site, thrift.mcc.org. The existing sites were deemed outdated and insufficient for their audience's needs. To address this, MCC sought the expertise of ImageX, a specialized agency in Drupal, to redesign and redevelop both sites. The goal was to create a more user-friendly experience that would allow multiple stakeholders and content editors to manage their respective sections effectively.
In collaboration with MCC, ImageX implemented a cohesive design that unified the Canadian and US branding. This involved creating a design system that featured various blocks, including a carousel showcasing story cards on key landing pages. This design not only enhanced the visual appeal but also improved the clarity of messaging, allowing users to easily navigate through stories categorized by location, type, and theme.
Additionally, the project incorporated a faceted search feature to enhance the user experience for both visitors and content editors. Key functionalities included links to more information based on taxonomy terms, a region indicator, an embedded podcast player, and searchable tags. These features were designed to facilitate better engagement and accessibility across the sites.
The results of the redesign were significant. MCC achieved a visually engaging and user-centered website that implemented a story-focused content strategy, improved SEO, and enhanced accessibility. The new mcc.org site effectively weaves storytelling through compelling imagery and information design, allowing users to discover the organization's mission and engage with its calls to action.
