Enhancing Data Governance at Canadian Blood Services with Microsoft Purview

Canadian Blood Services (CBS) undertook a significant initiative to enhance its Enterprise Data Governance Portal, aimed at improving the discoverability and governance of internal data assets. In 2025, the development team integrated Microsoft Purview into the portal, allowing for real-time access to essential business glossaries, data catalogues, and metadata through the Drupal platform.

The primary objective of this integration was to enhance data discoverability and transparency while ensuring that enterprise metadata is accessible and meaningful to non-technical business users. The project was executed with a strong emphasis on maintaining strict data governance and security standards, which are critical in the healthcare sector.

This enhancement was built upon CBS’s existing Drupal-based infrastructure, showcasing the platform's flexibility and capability to support complex integrations. The project was completed over a four-month period, culminating in a live demonstration at the Data Governance Symposium in 2025, which highlighted the successful outcomes of the initiative.
