amazee.io Modernizes Sandoz's Global Drupal Hosting Platform

case study

When pharmaceutical giant Sandoz sought to modernize its global web infrastructure, it faced the challenge of migrating over 180 decoupled Drupal sites from a restrictive legacy host. With no direct access to the original platform, limited internal resources, and the need to preserve thousands of redirects across hundreds of domains, the project demanded more than a simple transfer. Sandoz required a secure, high-performance solution that minimized disruption and reduced operational complexity.

amazee.io led the effort with an automation-first approach, using Ansible, AWX, and a base image strategy to create a repeatable deployment pipeline. This framework enabled sub-minute deployment times across all sites and supported a seamless, batched migration. In place of fragmented security systems, the team introduced a centralized CDN and advanced web application firewall, delivering consistent protection while simplifying ongoing maintenance.

To handle traffic for the entire portfolio, a single Node.js frontend was deployed on Kubernetes, routing requests to each individual Drupal backend. This unified architecture, combined with phased go-live processes and real-time observability, ensured zero downtime and gave Sandoz’s development teams faster workflows and rollback capabilities. The project stands as a model for large-scale Drupal hosting modernization under strict constraints.
