CKEditor Updates Add Footnotes, Line Height, and Restricted Editing

CKEditor has released updates to its Drupal integration modules, bringing footnotes, line height control, and restricted editing to modern content workflows. The Premium Features module 1.7.0 and Plugin Pack 1.5.0, published on 7 January 2026, are compatible with the latest CKEditor 5 and Drupal releases and focus on structured editing and content precision.

The Premium Features module adds a footnotes plugin that lets authors include citations, comments, or explanatory notes without interrupting the main text flow. Footnotes appear as numbered references and support complex content within a single note, including lists and tables, with customizable numbering formats.

A new line height plugin lets editors control vertical spacing between lines using presets or custom values. This capability supports consistent layout across paragraphs and lists and integrates with import/export workflows such as Import from Word, Export to Word, and Export to PDF.

Export to Word has also been improved with watermark support, allowing brands to embed logos, confidentiality markings, or notices directly into exported documents. The release includes a range of compatibility and stability fixes across themes and export features.

In the Plugin Pack module, a new restricted editing feature enables site builders to define specific editable regions while locking down other content. This helps maintain consistency in structured templates and compliance‑oriented workflows, where only designated sections should be modified by authors.

Additional refinements in the Plugin Pack release include improvements to layout tables, emoji support, link attribute handling, highlight behaviour for upcoming PHP changes, and dark mode compatibility in the Gin theme. The custom full‑screen plugin in the Premium Features module has been deprecated; users are encouraged to switch to the official fullscreen plugin available in the Plugin Pack.

These updates reinforce CKEditor’s role in enhancing structured content and editorial control for Drupal sites while maintaining compatibility with key publishing and collaboration workflows.
