Capturing the Colors of Drupal: A Visual Journey Through DriesNotes
Bert Boerland has taken a creative dive into the history of Drupal by analyzing the color palettes of Dries Buytaert’s keynote presentations, known as DriesNotes, from past European DrupalCons dating back to 2011.
Using a shell script on macOS, Bert downloaded and sampled frames from fifteen DrupalCon keynote videos, spanning from London 2011 to Vienna 2025. For each frame, he extracted the dominant color, compiling visual data into evolving palettes that reflect the mood, tone, and atmosphere of each event. While the videos were capped at one hour due to tool limitations, the representative samples reveal distinct visual shifts over time.
The project was inspired by a desire to explore Drupal’s identity through a new lens. Rather than focusing on product updates or technical changes, the color analysis offers an artistic perspective on how the Drupal community presents itself and is experienced. Boerland sees each DriesNote as more than a keynote, it’s a moment of cultural reflection and a statement about the open web's trajectory.
This exploration echoes the idea of adaptable code and community-driven creativity. Boerland’s script, which he promises to share openly, is designed to be repurposed rather than standardized mirroring recent thoughts on adaptable Drupal modules. He invites others to revisit the DriesNotes and notice how local expressions of Drupal merge into a shared global palette. The reflections culminate in anticipation for the next DrupalCon in Rotterdam, reinforcing Drupal's forward-looking spirit.
