Drupal Advent Calendar Day 11: Canvas Brings Visual Page Building to Drupal
Day 11 of James Shields' Drupal Advent Calendar introduces Drupal Canvas, a newly released visual builder now stable in version 1.0 and slated to become a core feature of Drupal CMS 2.0.
The feature was demonstrated during a session at DrupalCon Vienna by Lauri Timmanee and Bálint Kléri of Acquia. Their presentation focused less on slides and more on a live demo that walked through the practical use of Canvas to build a site. The tool allows users to create and arrange pages visually using standard Drupal blocks, Single Directory Components, and custom frontend code. With support for multi-step undo and the ability to prepare multiple pages before publishing, Canvas offers a streamlined and intuitive experience for site builders.
At the time of the talk, Canvas was in its release candidate stage, but it has since reached a stable 1.0 release. This milestone marks a major advancement in Drupal’s push toward a more user-friendly, low-code development model. Canvas provides a real-time, component-based design environment that lowers the barrier to entry while preserving flexibility, and it is expected to play a central role in Drupal CMS 2.0’s rollout in early 2026.
