Shumpei Kishi Pioneers AI-Powered Tutorial Workflow to Expand Drupal Adoption in Japan
Shumpei Kishi, a bilingual solutions engineer and long-time web developer, has unveiled an automated video production pipeline designed to deliver Japanese-language Drupal tutorials at scale. Motivated by the high level of engagement at DrupalCon Asia’s Contribution Day in Nara, Kishi set out to address a critical gap in the local ecosystem: the lack of accessible, high-quality Drupal learning resources in Japanese.
While the global Drupal community benefits from an abundance of English-language documentation and video tutorials, many developers in Japan encounter a language barrier that limits their ability to fully participate. Recognizing that code alone is not enough to grow local adoption, Kishi focused on building a solution to localize educational content efficiently. The result is an AI-assisted workflow that reduces tutorial production time by 75 percent and supports rapid content generation without compromising quality.
The system begins with a raw screen recording of a Drupal demo. That video is then processed by Gemini, Google’s multimodal AI model, which interprets user actions and generates a timestamped script in Japanese. The script is narrated using Voicevox, an open-source text-to-speech engine, and the final output is rendered with Remotion, a React-based video editing tool. The entire workflow removes the need for manual narration, subtitle syncing, and video pacing edit tasks that previously made short videos time-intensive and difficult to scale.
The end product is presented under the brand “Professor Beluga’s Drupal Classroom,” a Japanese-language tutorial series aimed at beginners. Kishi acts as the architect and reviewer of the process while AI handles production. The system’s design ensures consistent formatting and accurate timing while allowing flexibility for updates and expansions. Kishi notes that what once took over two hours to produce a five-minute video, can now be created in about 30 minutes or less.
Beyond Drupal tutorials, the system architecture is applicable to internal product demos, partner enablement materials, and technical webinars. Although currently optimized for Japanese, Kishi is developing support for English-language output by integrating enterprise-grade voice engines such as ElevenLabs and OpenAI Audio. His ultimate vision is a “One Source, Multi-Language” workflow that generates global content from a single video recording, expanding the reach and impact of technical documentation across language barriers.
Kishi attributes the inspiration for this project to his experiences at DrupalCon Asia, where he witnessed the enthusiasm and skill of Japanese contributors. He believes that bridging language divides is essential for the growth of Drupal and other open source communities. By combining engineering precision with AI-assisted storytelling, he aims to foster a more inclusive learning environment for developers around the world.
