Call for Drupal Core Subsystem and Topic Maintainers Following 2025 Check-In
The 2025 Annual Maintainer Check-In has wrapped up, surfacing open opportunities within Drupal core for those ready to take on or share maintainer responsibilities.
As a result of the check-in, a number of Drupal core subsystems and topic areas have been identified as currently unmaintained. These include Authentication and Authorization, Automated Cron, Ban, Bootstrap, Content Moderation, Content Translation, Cron, Database Update API, Filter, Image, Inline Form Errors, Installer, Language, Lock, Mail, Markup, Menu UI, MySQL DB driver, Options, Path, PostgreSQL DB driver, Request Processing, Settings Tray, Sqlite DB driver, System, Token, and Workflows. The Documentation topic area is also currently unassigned.
Maintainers are essential in guiding development, reviewing merge requests, and supporting contributors across their designated areas. The role is open to individuals with experience in relevant parts of the codebase, including those who are newer to core development but ready to grow their involvement. Co-maintaining is encouraged for those looking to share responsibilities.
The call for new maintainers is being coordinated by Griffyn Heels, a member of the Drupal Core Leadership Team, who is overseeing the review process and helping ensure that key areas receive the support they need.
To express interest, community members are invited to comment on the issue titled Seeking subsystem and topic maintainers for open positions on Drupal.org. Comments should include a name, Drupal.org username, and a short statement about relevant experience or interest. Alternatively, contributors may contact Griffyn directly via Drupal Slack at @griffynh.
Once interest is submitted, a public issue is created for community review. The Drupal Core Leadership Team then evaluates the application, provides feedback where needed, and updates the maintainer status accordingly. This process ensures transparency and support for new maintainers stepping into leadership roles.
