Taranto-Viva Web Map Uses Drupal and MapLibre to Drive Civic Engagement
Italo Mairo has developed an interactive urban map for Taranto, Southern Italy, combining React and MapLibre GL JS within a partially decoupled Drupal application to promote civic engagement and territorial awareness.
The project, created for Day 8 of the #30DayMapChallenge under the “Urban” theme, is part of Taranto-Viva.com, a site focused on public participation and city promotion. The web map employs vector tiling and overlay techniques sourced from OpenStreetMap and the Overture Maps Foundation, and connects seamlessly with Drupal’s content and geographic capabilities through the Geofield module stack.
The map allows for interactive exploration of urban data and integrates dynamic content management through Drupal, offering a modern approach to web cartography. While primarily a showcase of digital civic infrastructure, the project also reflects how decoupled architectures can be used in real-world geographic applications. Italo also points to a related session, “Drupal & Geomapping,” scheduled for DrupalCamp Italy in Rome on November 14, 2025, for those interested in further exploring these integrations.
