Dries Buytaert Charts Drupal’s AI-Focused Roadmap at DrupalCon Vienna
At this year’s DrupalCon in Vienna, Dries Buytaert presented the October 2025 State of Drupal keynote, highlighting how the open-source CMS is evolving to meet the demands of an AI-first internet. The talk revealed major product shifts —from visual site building and intelligent automation to streamlined workflows —under a unified vision of adapting to and thriving in an AI-driven digital world.
Buytaert’s central message, "AI is the storm, but it’s also the way through it," framed the unveiling of several core advancements. Drupal Canvas, a React-based visual editor, is launching in November 2025 and will become the default in Drupal CMS 2.0. Meanwhile, new Site Templates offer turnkey setups built atop Drupal Recipes, with a planned marketplace to foster community reuse.
Now in version 1.2, the Drupal AI Initiative introduces capabilities like full-page generation in Canvas, a central Context Control Center, and autonomous agents that track and propose content updates site-wide. On the orchestration front, Drupal integrates tools like ECA and ActivePieces for no-code automation—what Buytaert calls “DXP 2.0.”
The keynote also signalled a cultural shift within the Drupal community. Standing-room crowds and expanded agency participation reflected a confident embrace of AI-era challenges. Buytaert closed by inviting contributors to shape the future via the #orchestration channel on Drupal Slack ahead of DrupalCon Chicago 2026.
