State of Drupal Open University: A Community Initiative Bringing Drupal to Classrooms Worldwide
In a recent LinkedIn post, Jean-Paul Vosmeer reflected on the growth of the Drupal Open University Initiative, a community-driven project bringing Drupal into academic environments worldwide. What began as a small idea among a few contributors has evolved into a collaborative effort connecting educators, students, and agencies to develop open-source teaching materials and standardized Drupal curricula.
The initiative’s mission is to introduce Drupal to students and aspiring developers early in their learning journeys, helping cultivate future contributors to the open-source ecosystem. Vosmeer credited Hilmar Kári Hallbjörnsson of Reykjavík University for creating the first comprehensive Drupal course and noted that others around the world are now expanding on that work.
Structured around four pillars—Courses and Teachers, Universities and Schools, Community, and the Initiative itself—the program seeks to build and share academic-level Drupal modules, organize “Drupal in a Day” sessions at events such as Drupaljam and DrupalCon, and formalize Drupal courses at universities through partnerships and guest lectures. It also encourages local communities to include beginner-friendly tracks at Drupal camps and meetups, making the project accessible to newcomers.
Vosmeer emphasized that Drupal Open University complements rather than competes with existing learning platforms. By open-sourcing course materials and aligning with ongoing educational and outreach efforts, the initiative aims to make Drupal easier to adopt and evaluate, in line with Dries Buytaert’s long-term vision for community growth.
Contributors to the initiative include André Angelantoni, Ben Mullins, Darren Oh, Yan Zhang, Esmeralda Tijhoff, Gayatri Tandon, Nico Grienauer, Guzman Bellon, Wouter Immerzeel, and many others collaborating through #open-university-initiative on Drupal Slack.
