A More Intentional Photo Sharing Workflow Built with Drupal
Several years ago, Dries Buytaert stopped using Instagram and instead built a photo stream on his personal website. Motivated by privacy concerns and a desire for a more personal, ad-free space, he created a quiet, self-hosted environment for sharing images with friends and family.
Powered by Drupal, Dries’ website replaces the social media model with a more intentional sharing setup. Since followers no longer receive automatic notifications, he first introduced an RSS feed and later a monthly photo newsletter to help friends stay connected. However, manually formatting each newsletter soon became a barrier to consistency.
To streamline the process, he extended his custom Drupal module with two new routes: one for viewing photos by month, and another for generating an email-friendly version. With this change, his newsletter workflow shrank from twenty minutes to just one, turning a cumbersome task into a sustainable monthly ritual. While complete automation is possible, Dries prefers retaining a small amount of manual involvement to stay connected to his content.
“Automation doesn’t just save time,” Dries notes. “It also preserves good intentions.”
This project reflects his broader philosophy about digital ownership and mindful creation — using open source tools to maintain autonomy, privacy, and authenticity. His approach demonstrates how Drupal can power not just enterprise systems but also deeply personal, human-centred workflows.
