Premium Drupal Themes Poised for a Comeback [Proposed]
Mike Herchel argues that Drupal’s next growth opportunity lies in premium themes, made viable by Single Directory Components (SDCs). Historically, Drupal theming has been costly and complex, requiring deep expertise in render arrays, Twig, JavaScript behaviors, and accessibility. This complexity has often led teams to decouple frontends, but that approach increases technical debt and diminishes Drupal’s strengths like Views and display modes.
The lack of a robust theme ecosystem has also hurt Drupal competitively. While WordPress, Webflow, and Wix offer thousands of commercial themes, Drupal has fewer than 400, many of which are starter or admin-focused. This shortfall contributes to higher costs of ownership and limited mid-market adoption.
With SDCs in Drupal 10.1, theme vendors can now ship complete, styled, accessible, and performance-optimized component libraries that integrate directly with Drupal. Combined with tools like SDC Display and Drupal Canvas, this shift enables reusable, maintainable premium themes that solve Drupal-specific theming challenges once and for all, saving agencies significant costs. Dripyard, founded by Drupal core maintainers, is preparing to launch a suite of such themes to bring Drupal closer to competitors’ ecosystems.
