Blog Post by Oliver Davies Reflects on Drupal 7 End of Life Milestone
In a recent blog post, seasoned Drupal developer Oliver Davies highlights a significant moment in the Drupal community: the End of Life (EOL) for Drupal 7, scheduled for January 5, 2024. This marks the official conclusion of updates and support for the CMS, which has been a mainstay for web development since its release in January 2011.
Remarkably, Drupal 7 will have outlasted both Drupal 8 and 9, which have already reached EOL. Despite its longevity, many Drupal 7 websites remain in production, raising concerns about the migration process for site owners.
Davies noted an interesting shift in usage trends, observing a decline in the use of the "Override Node Options" module for Drupal 7, while its usage on Drupal 8 and higher versions has grown. This shift highlights a broader move within the community toward Drupal 10, 11, and the new Drupal CMS project.
With Drupal 7’s EOL imminent, the blog post serves as both a reflection on its legacy and a call for site owners to transition to supported versions to leverage modern features and enhanced security.
