Tooltip Accessibility and WCAG: Freelock’s Advent Day 9 Insight
Freelock’s ninth Drupal Advent Calendar post unpacks the accessibility standard WCAG 1.4.13, focusing on the usability challenges posed by content that appears on hover or focus like tooltips, dropdowns, and contextual help.
Tooltips often disappear too quickly, obscure important content, or can’t be interacted with creating major barriers for users relying on screen magnifiers, keyboard navigation, or assistive technology. WCAG 1.4.13 requires such content to be dismissible without moving focus, hoverable without vanishing, and persistent until intentionally dismissed or no longer valid. Many interfaces fail to meet these criteria, frustrating users who need more time or control to read the content.
The article highlights common failures, including vanishing tooltips, inaccessible dropdowns, and positioning issues that hide content beneath the pointer. Freelock recommends allowing tooltips to be dismissed with the Escape key, ensuring that they remain visible when hovered, and avoiding automatic timeouts. For better accessibility, ARIA roles like role="tooltip" and aria-describedby should be used to provide screen reader context.
Freelock closes by suggesting alternatives to hover-triggered content, such as inline help text, toggleable icons, or persistent sidebars. The takeaway: hover and focus interactions should enhance not hinder usability. Proper implementation not only meets accessibility guidelines but improves the experience for all users.
