Search API Typesense Module Gains Momentum with Community Planning After DrupalCon Europe 2025
During a Birds of a Feather (BoF) session at DrupalCon Europe 2025 in Vienna, contributors gathered to shape the future of the Search API Typesense module. Facilitated by Roberto Peruzzo, the discussion focused on real-world developer experiences and laid the groundwork for planned improvements to schema setup, frontend security, and integration pathways.
The module connects Drupal’s Search API with Typesense—a fast, typo-tolerant search engine known for real-time indexing, vector embeddings, and compatibility with modern frontend tools. Unlike other Search API backends, it encourages direct JS integration for better performance, though this introduces new concerns around access control and developer onboarding.
To address these concerns, the community proposed a range of actionable improvements:
- Simplified schema configuration using “recipes” and a multistep setup form
- Secure JS search via a proposed Drupal proxy that mirrors Typesense APIs while enforcing user access
- Views module integration as either a plugin or clearly documented workaround for traditional Drupal listings
- Clearer documentation on schema concepts, proxy setup, and implementation patterns
Feedback from the session is now being tracked in a planning issue on Drupal.org. Future development will explore whether to implement these features directly or provide guidance for teams to extend the module to fit their stack.
The project continues to be developed in collaboration with the Drupal community, with contributions from SparkFabrik and others. All developers and site builders using Typesense with Drupal are encouraged to participate and help shape the next iteration of search in the ecosystem.
