Award-Winning Blended Learning Programme Reaches 61,000 Learners Across China and Indonesia
London, United Kingdom
The British Council and Opencentric have won Gold at the Learning Technologies Awards 2025 in the category ‘Best Use of Blended Learning – Public and Non-Profit Sector.’
The award recognises the joint programme ‘Transforming Teaching Through Blended Learning at Scale,’ which has delivered impactful teacher development across education systems in China and Indonesia. Using Opencentric’s ‘In Class’ mobile platform, the initiative has directly supported more than 1,600 teachers and reached an estimated 61,000 learners indirectly.
The judges praised the project for its “strong alignment between pedagogy and technology, used to empower educators and enhance learning quality.” They highlighted the programme’s scale, complexity, and commitment to improving teaching practices through accessible, high-quality professional development.
This achievement comes at a critical time, as teachers face unprecedented pressures and education systems work to address widening learning gaps worldwide. The continued partnership between the British Council and Opencentric reflects an ongoing commitment to strengthening teaching quality and learner outcomes across diverse educational contexts.
In China, it has improved teachers’ competence and confidence using English in class through a combination of mobile learning, mentoring and peer communities. In Indonesia, it supported a large-scale national rollout, training more than 480 teachers across 35 provinces and upskilling local mentors to sustain the impact.
Dr Adam Edmett, Head of EdTech and Innovation at the British Council, said:
“This award reflects the real-world impact of our work with teachers and learners. We are thrilled to see our blended learning approach recognised on an international stage. It demonstrates how technology and pedagogy can work hand-in-hand to transform education at scale.”
William Velasco, CEO at Opencentric, added:
“Winning Gold at the Learning Technologies Awards is a significant milestone for our team. It reflects our shared commitment with the British Council to improving teaching quality on a global scale. As education systems continue to adapt to new challenges, we will keep building solutions that are practical, scalable, and grounded in real classroom needs. This project proves that impactful digital transformation is possible when technology is built with educators at its heart.”
